After a long time away – the Blades were finally back in the Championship. A place that Chris Wilder often refers to being ‘a minimum where this football club should play it’s football’. Bramall Lane was packed, a near full house ready to greet the centurions of the season before and the new recruits from the summer.
A confident start from the Blades was rewarded when that man Billy Sharp connected to a Leon Clarke cross and found the back of the net.
Brentford came on strong in the second half but a resolute and sound defensive display ensured it was a winning start to life back in the Championship after a long, long six seasons away.
Wilders post-match comments;
"We've had it tough in this city, a football city as it is. That is a reward for the outstanding support, loyalty and love of their football club that they've shown through thick and thin. The atmosphere was right up there today.
Outstanding effort against a brilliant Brentford side. The roar that greeted us, the positivity allowed the players to lift their game at times when they were very, very tired.
Billy's goal scoring record speaks for itself and I think we've created chances today. We didn't play particularly well with the ball - we can play a lot better."
